IBM (IBM) announced Wednesday that it has built a more powerful quantum computing chip, taking another step toward building quantum machines that can provide commercial value to businesses. The company has been working to achieve this goal for years.

The 433-qubit Osprey chip, unveiled at IBM's annual Quantum Summit in New York, has more than three times the qubit count of the 127-qubit Eagle chip introduced last year.

But IBM aims to steadily ramp up its quantum computing capabilities over the next few years. The company said it plans to launch a system of more than 4,000 qubits in 2025 that will be able to solve some problems faster or more accurately than classical computers, and provide solutions for problems that today's most powerful computers can only make estimates Precise solution to achieve a milestone known as "quantum supremacy".

Dario Gil, IBM senior vice president and director of IBM Research, said the company will continue to build on that, and eventually quantum systems will contain millions of qubits.

"We're getting closer," Gil said. "It's another step. Maybe a few more steps, but it's getting closer."
