Wearing political slogans on clothes and holding a rainbow flag to compete in the World Cup

A man carrying a rainbow flag on a jacket with the words "Save Ukraine" on the front and "Respect Iranian Women" on the back protested at the World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay.

In the second half of the 2022 Qatar World Cup Group H match between Portugal and Uruguay, a man broke into the field and stayed for about 30 seconds before being stopped by security and escorted away from the scene.

The man wore the slogans "Save Ukraine" and "Respect for Iranian Women" printed on the front and back, respectively.

Gay rights and the use of the rainbow flag have been among the issues brewing at the World Cup in Qatar, which outlaws homosexuality.

During the World Cup, seven European teams originally planned to let their captains wear rainbow armbands that symbolize anti-discrimination. But they had to abandon such a plan after FIFA warned they could face disciplinary action, including a yellow card.

Sports Secretary Stuart Andrew, who is gay, will wear a rainbow armband while watching England v Wales.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wore a rainbow armband with "One Love" in Germany's shock 2-1 loss to Japan last week, sitting next to FIFA President Infantino (Gianni Infantino) watching the ball.

Fans complained early in the game that they were being asked to remove their rainbow tops.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre, who is out, spoke about today's episode of protests on the field ahead of the politically charged game between the United States and Iran.

"We are really concerned about the possible treatment of LGBTQ+ spectators and athletes," she said.

"We urge Qatar and the people of the country to fully understand the king's message, which is to truly recognize and welcome all to the World Cup."

For this protest, FIFA said it would not comment at this stage.
