2022-11-17

U.S. Ambassador to Japan Emmanuel welcomed the start of mass production of cutting-edge semiconductors by a subsidiary of U.S. semiconductor giant Micron Technology in Higashihiroshima City, Hiroshima Prefecture on the 16th, saying that "Japan and the United States (semiconductor cooperation) are getting closer strategically. This investment is one of them." The project will be one of the core of semiconductor supply chain cooperation between the two countries amid the rising importance of economic security.

With the support of the Japanese government, Micron also started mass production of the most cutting-edge DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) "1β" that day. Emanuel, who was interviewed locally, said that this is also an important investment for "the economic stability and security of Japan and the United States."

Considering the rise of technology in mainland China and the unexpected situation in Taiwan, Japan and the United States are deepening cooperation among like-minded countries, including strengthening the supply chain and research and development of new-generation semiconductors.

The Hiroshima factory not only mass-produces 1β, but also functions as a research and development base. Micron mainly employs Hiroshima factory and employs more than 4,000 technicians in Japan. It is expected to contribute to the local economy and employment through investment in the latest technology.
