Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella announces layoffs in Seattle
On Monday, Microsoft laid off 559 employees from its Bellevue and Redmond offices, bringing the total number of job cuts in the Seattle area to 2,743, which accounts for more than a quarter of the 10,000 layoffs announced earlier this year.
The Washington State Employment Security Department announced the job cuts on Monday.
On Friday, Insider reported that hundreds of security employees were facing job cuts under Charlie Bell, a former executive of Amazon Web Services who joined Microsoft in 2021. According to Insider, the job cuts were outlined in confidential Microsoft documents that were leaked to the publication. However, Insider did not provide any information on the location of the affected workers.
In addition, according to a report by Calcalist, dozens of cybersecurity employees are being laid off from Microsoft operations in Israel.
When asked about the reports from Business Insider and Calcalist, a Microsoft spokesperson did not provide any comment. Instead, they stated that Monday's layoffs were part of the company's previously announced efforts to adjust its cost structure to match its revenue, which was announced in January.
